The rhythm is a resource that can generate through the repetition of parts movement. In architecture, it allows an appreciation space that invites you to move more or less rapidly.

Some definitions:

Diminishing: Decrease in size, extend or range.

Relief: shapes carved on a surface so as to stand out from the surrounding background.

Subtly: difficult to detect or grasp by the mind.

Mere: simple.

Width: the extend of something from side to side.

Bay spacing: each space or interval between the frames of a steel building is a “bay”.

Narrow: limited in size or scope.

Rhythm: the ordered recurrence of elements in a composition.

Types:

Repetition of shapes:
windows, doors, columns, wall areas, arches, and the like.

Repetition of dimensions: such as the dimensions between supports or those of bay spacing.

Repetition of differences: In this rhythmical series, the ascending and descending progressions are built up from small to large and to small again.
Open rhythm: A mere repetition of similar units equally spaced and without a defined beginning or a defined end.

Rhythm of lines: Such rhythms can be merely systematic variations of linear lengths or curvatures.

Rhythms of the masses: The repeated masses.

Vertical Rhythms: Produce a mass of great impact.

Regular Rhythm: Achieve only monotony.

The spiral is one of the most rhythmical of forms because of its combination of repeated curves around a focus and the continual progressive change in the radius of the curvature.

On the facade of this cathedral we see the use of rhythm to generate a sense of height that rises to heaven.
The repetition of windows framed in arches like the doors. There is a modulation that divides the facade into three segments, the two towers and the nave. The repetition of the columns also helps generate the rhythm of the facade accentuate the modulation.
